So who will replace Jon Hecht on the Town Council?

By H2otown - Posted on 18 September 2008

Allow H2otown a moment to say this:  Jon Hecht was an excellent Town Councillor.  He thought things through systematically.  He did not wing it.  He was serious about public policy and unlike H2otown can actually spell "governance" correctly the first time.   ...So who's going to replace him on that esteemed body?  Hm?! [How much did H2otown love the "I'm going to Disneyland!" quote in the TAB?  A lot!]

There was discussion he would stay on the council. Has anyone heard what the story is?

Hecht hasn't said one way or the other what he'd do after he finishes this term. But reading between the lines I'd say there's a good chance he may try to do a Tim Toomey. He's the longtime Cambridge City Councilor who is also a state rep. The argument is there's no better advocate for your town on Beacon Hill than someone who is also serving on the city or town council. The counterargument is that being on Town Council and being a state rep at the same time is double dipping. I have sympathy for that argument, but the two jobs are at different levels of government (one local, one state). Toomey seems to do it pretty well.

My understanding is that Jon himself will serve out at least the rest of his term. That should at least save the town some money for not having to hold a special election.

In 2009, who knows who will pop up? There have been some rumblings that School Committee Chair Tony Paolillo might want to jump to the Council, but maybe he'd rather run at-large or challenge Clyde than just run as a district councilor. All I know is that it's too bad H2OTown HQ is in District A!

Tony would not be a bad choice.  We could do (and have done) a lot worse.

The closest I get to those chairs the town Council sits in is my TiVo, and that's final!! How's the family, Steve?

I made sure I voted for the first person listed that wasn't Devaney... what were ther results of that race? Bonus button for H2otown members who voted in the 2006 general election

Here's the story we did over here at the TAB.

I thought Julia Fahey was smart and looked like she would be a dedicated public servant.  I would love to see her run for Jon's town council seat in 2010.  I am glad Jon beat her for the State Rep seat.  He has the wisdom, maturity and leadership qualities she could acquire by serving as a town councilor.  I'd also be happy to see Tony Paolillo run, especially for chair.

If I'm not mistaken, Julia now lives in District D, so she wouldn't be eligible for Jon's seat unless she moved back to B.

That said, I think she'd be a great voice on the council.
