No Place for Hate croaked by ADL genocide denial
No Place for Hate: Illustration for No Place for Hate article.
Yup, it's official; the Town Council has voted to rescind the resolution enrolling the town in the No Place for Hate program of the Anti-Defamation League.
The program, sponsored by the Anti-Defamation League and the Massachusetts Municipal Association, creates a volunteer task force of citizens to respond to any hate crimes committed in their town.
The town was enrolled in the program for two years until one resident noticed the No Place for Hate sign posted on a utility pole in front of Town Hall; he claimed, falsely, that the program was one of mind control and restricted his freedom of speech as a culturally conservative person.
Facing renewed scrutiny (and presumably a few Google searches) locals discovered that the current head of the ADL refuses to recognize the Armenian Genocide, a bizarre and disappointing stance for an organization formed to protect the rights of Jewish people from bigotry.
Three Things:
1) I am extremely happy that the town no longer will participate in this program. The ADL's stance on the Armenian Genocide is pretty much indefensible.
2) I am also not comfortable with you stating the "fact" that this program did not involve a goal of mind control. I believe any program that hinders free speech, no matter how hate-filled the speech might seem to someone else, is most definitely an attempt at controlling thought.
3) Having said that, I am happy to offer my services as a volunteer in any similar effort to re-paint properties defaced by cretinous vandals and the other wonderful neighborly efforts that would have been part of this. I hope that all those who wanted to see the sign come down will volunteer themselves, too.
If any such organization is being formed, please feel free to contact me via e-mail and I will do what I'm able.

I once had a lot of respect for the ADL. Last year, it proved itself to be a cheap political prostitute when it whitewashed anti-Semitic hate speech at MoveOn.org's now-disgraced Action Forum. One piece of hate speech said, in effect, that Jews did "something" to deserve the Holocaust. Maybe ADL's opposition to hate ends where the left wing of the Democratic Party begins.
This pales in comparison, however, to ADL's recent effort to downplay an actual genocide (which Hitler cited to argue that he could get away with exterminating the Poles to create "living space" for his so-called Master Race). Abraham Foxman has really damaged his credibility with this.
