I love Freecycle
I don't remember how I find out about Freecycle but I am here to sing its praises.
To quote the website http://www.freecycle.org, "The Freecycle Network™ is made up of 4,162 groups with 4,050,000 members across the globe. It's a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. It's all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills. Each local group is moderated by a local volunteer (them's good people). Membership is free."
The Watertown group has over 400 members.
I have been working at de-cluttering and clearing out my attic and closets. One thing that keeps me going is knowing that the stuff that is perfectly good but not useful to me any longer (examples: my old scanner, printer, child booster seat, three-ring binders, tape recorder) are being used by my neighbors and not taking up space in trash dumps. Or staying in my attic because I feel guilty throwing away something still useful. This is not stuff for sale...you give it away.
Recent items offered by others on the list have included wood from a tree that was cut down, stereo system, CD racks, baby clothes, and more.
The way it works is I post my item on the email list and get emails from people who want the item. They come and take it away. Once the item is taken, I post that the item is gone so no one keeps contacting me.
I hope other Watertown residents who want to simplify their lives or just SEE their basement floor join the Watertown Freecycle group at http://www.freecycle.org. It's wicked cool.
We acquired a nice window fan unit last summer from a student who was leaving town thanks to Freecycle, and I've seen all sorts of great stuff get posted on the mailing list.

I have given a few things away - and it was really quick and easy to do so. My hubby was all nervous about giving out our address to a stranger, so I left it on the porch. It was mostly anonymous, and a nice thing for both me and the receiver. I got to clear things out without feeling like I was "throwing it away"
